I’m John Davey, an artist and printmaker based in the North West of England.

Five Quarters features my prints (lino prints and monoprints), along with some greetings cards.

I discovered a love for lino printing in 2014, and soon after that I bought an old victorian book press for printing them.

If you’re unfamiliar with lino prints, I carve the designs out of lino block, cutting away the bits I don’t want to appear. Then, I roll ink over the completed design and use pressure to transfer it onto paper.

Each design is carved by hand, and then printed by hand using an old Victorian book press. This hand-crafted nature of the medium means each print is subtly unique - no two are exactly the same.

The designs are limited editions, usually of only 15-25, with each print individually signed and numbered.

I originally trained as an illustrator and spent many years working in illustration and design.

This latest news post is actually the first of a few updates that look back to how I’ve got to where I am now.

So, here’s a throwback to when I was an illustrator. I did a lot of work for weekly magazines, often simple humorous images to accompany editorial stories. Here’s a few examples from the mid-to-late 1980s.
